Festive Wishes

Christmas is absolutely one of the favourite times of year for the FoA Girls – we love the twinkling lights, the shining tinsel, the smell of the Christmas Tree, the carols, sound of the letterbox clanking with something other than the usual bills!!  And, of course, we enjoy and appreciate the time we get to spend with family and friends.

Seasonal craft-room hep!

This year we had Holly the Elf with us in the busier than usual run up to the festive season. She arrived with chocolates for the grown ups (always a good way to introduce yourself!) and was a huge help with all the cutting, folding, foiling, gluing and packing. We individually hand applied well over 1200 gemstones during December. Holly also joined us on family trips and we are missing her already! Here are a few of the highlights from her time with us…

Christmas Traditions

Traditionally (for me at least) Christmas Eve involves last minute shopping (usually the vegggies and cheeses with shorter use by dates!), card writing, reading ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore and attending Midnight Service.

Then, with the tree lights twinkling, shopping completed, cards written and the presents wrapped – its time to stop, relax and probably eat and drink WAY too much while celebrating with family and friends.

This was also Tasha’s first Christmas with us, and another reason to celebrate. No longer the grumpy, hissing, anti-social puss we collected back in February but a contented and social (on her own terms obviously!). A cat who enjoyed all the fuss made of her with the various additional visitors to her kingdom. Although suspicious of her new climbing post, her foodie nature meant she did explore to find her tasty treats before snuggling up nice and cosy – at ground level!!

But it’s also a time to reflect and be grateful. There are countless others who will not enjoy the season and for a wide range of reasons so we spare a thought for the emergency services, medical teams, servicemen and women, the elderly or recently bereaved…..the list goes on.

That in between bit…

Now it’s that strange in between bit of the year where its not Christmas anymore, but the New Year hasn’t arrived either and we can’t quite keep track of which day it is!! For retailers it becomes a mad rush to remove the Christmas promotions, and start the Boxing Day / January Sales and of course…. yep – Easter!!

A New Decade

The last decade seems to have flown by and there have been so many changes! At the start of it, we were looking forward to the London 2012 Olympics – now, as we approach the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics seeing the Olympic Torch as it passed through our (then) hometown and the event itself seem such distant memories and as the FoA Girls look forward to the New Year and the New Decade – we have plenty planned, both personally and for Floating on Air Designs!

A few Dates you may like to Remember!

31st December 2019/1st January 2020New Years Eve/Day but how are you celebrating? Have you made any New Year Resolutions? Or are you simply resolved to not bother!

7th February 2020 – Send a Card to a Friend Day – no need to wait for their birthday, surprise a friend with a card today!

14th February 2020 – Valentines Day are you hoping to receive cards from an unknown admirer? Or planning a romantic surprise for the love of your life?

29th February 2020 – YES!! Its a Leap Year – time for all you Leap Babies to celebrate your REAL birthday and for us girls to get down on one knee (if we are so inclined!)

1st March 2020 – St David’s Day – the feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales who died on this date in 589 AD.

17th March 2020 – St Patricks Day – a cultural and religious celebration held on the traditional death date of  the foremost patron saint of Ireland.

22nd March 2020 – Mothers Day – Traditionally known as Mothering Sunday but how will you be showing your Mum how much you love and appreciate her?

Wishing you a Happy and Safe New Year – See you in 2020!!

Summers Over?

How is it that the summer holidays that seemed to stretch for an eternity at the end of the last school year – are over already?!

For the Floating on Air Girls, the summer has been a mix of family fun, changing addresses, soggy weekends (see our previous blog!), a Bank Holiday trip down memory lane, celebrations of a First Class Degree achievement ….

Southlake, Woodley – this used to be within minutes of our home

The New Bulmershe Leisure Centre is taking shape….

The New Bulmershe Leisure Centre is taking shape….Having spent a long and very happy career at the old leisure centre, we were so sad to see it demolished but have been watching the building of the new centre with interest and were amazed by the progress made in recent months.

A little blustery in the morning but a fabulous source of inspiration..
The ‘compulsory’ 2p push machines!!

The beach was a little blustery in the morning and the tide was fully out but it was a LOT warmer in the afternoon, the tide came in allowing paddling (and swimming!) and the day was a fabulous source of design inspiration. The ‘compulsory’ 2p push machines, with a surprisingly good return!!

Such a fabulous day of celebration, so proud!

New Year, New Challenges, New Designs

The start of a new academic year brings challenges for all – teachers need to learn new names (a skill I wish I was better at!) and find the best way to ensure their pupils progress well. Students need to learn new timetables, new teachers, new lessons, some will be starting their SATS, GCSE or A levels. Older students could be starting university or, having just graduated be heading out into the world for their first jobs….

For us it’s new designs and that means thinking ahead to the Blue Cross Week (7th-13th October) and (shhhhhhh!!) Christmas!!

Balloon Fiesta

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta

The FoA Girls at Bristol International Balloon Fiesta 2018

BIBF 2018This time last year, surrounded by the hot air balloons of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta that inspired our logo,  we – myself and my 2 daughters – ‘launched’ our Instagram page

The FoA Girls at Bristol International Balloon Fiesta 2019
BIBF 2019

So, here we are at Ashton Court Estate in Bristol last night, awaiting the ‘Naked Glow’

Fingers Crossed

We’ve also got our fingers crossed the weather will improve and allow us to see lots of balloons inflated and taking off during the 41st Bristol International Balloon Fiesta weekend.

The ‘Naked Glow’ with balloon burners dancing to the music!

It therefore seems the ideal time to ‘launch’ our blog!

Floating on Air Designs is a small family venture with ambitions of ‘flying high’

Bored with the mass produced cards from the High Street, we started creating our own personalised cards to send to friends and family. The recipients loved them and soon started to ask us to create for them too.

Our aim is simple

to produce high quality, hand crafted cards with the option to personalise.

That’s the easy bit tho!
The ever present sketch pad – not giving too much away with this picture tho!!

Inspiration for designs can strike at any time – I now have a sketch pad in my handbag, my kit bag (I am also a busy Swimming Teacher) and next to the bed for ideas in the middle of the night! It was with us as we sat at the edge of the fiesta arena last night and tonight as we enjoy a slightly drier and warmer pizza and film night!!

During the last year we’ve met some fantastic people, had a lot of fun creating new and bespoke designs, received loads of support and encouragement.

We’re learning

about building our brand, our internet following and our website – which is our biggest current project!!

We have lots of other ideas in mind for the coming months and years and hope you will join us for ‘the ride’!
